Multilevel Modular Capacitor-Clamped DC-DC Converter (MMCCC)
Faisal Khan
Dr Leon M Tolbert
Description
This research was initiated in December 2005, and it was also funded by ORNL. This research involved the design of a new dc-dc converter topology based on capacitor-clamped method. This converter was primarily intended to be used in hybrid and future fuel cell vehicles. Several key features of the MMCCC topology were complete modular structure, bi-directional power handling capability, very high efficiency operation, and multiple load-source integration ability. The initial prototype was a 500 W converter with a conversion ratio of 6. Faisal is presently working on a 5-level 5 kW MMCCC converter with an operating voltage of 250 V/ 50 V.
